Camelid Identification System

100% Accurate DNA Markers

Q & A

Q: How do you certify your Camelids with CIS?
A: Visit the Collecting Samples page, watch the video and read the instructions. The CIS system is very user-friendly and you can be submitting samples in less than thirty minutes.

Certification is established via hair follicle samples on each individual Camelid being certified to establish a CIS DNA profile. There are three main tests offered.

  1. A basic CIS DNA Profile. This can be performed on any animal and is intended to provide a starting profile for this animals lineage. To perform a DNA profile it is not necessary to verify parentage.
  2. CIS Parental Verification. This option is used when both parents are already in the CIS database. Up to five sires can be tested for no additional fee.
  3. Foreign Parental Lineage Qualification(***NON-CIS CERTIFIED***) note: Choose this option if Parent confirmation by DNA analysis has been completed by a qualified registry or laboratory other than CIS, and you DO NOT WANT the parents certified with CIS. If you choose this option you will need to provide CIS with a copy of the Camelids registry certificate and DNA lab report to verifying lineage supplied by the qualified registry or laboratory. For those qualified registries that do not confirm lineage by DNA, only the Camelids registry certificate is required. An additional fee of $15 is required for this option.
    • CIS documents and records all Camelid lineage whether DNA typed or not.
    • The CIS classification system documents Camelids by registry and laboratory DNA system

Example: See DNA code recognition by CIS below:

  1. GOLD text represents animals that are DNA profiled by CIS. If an animal appears in gold text and both parents appear in gold text, that animal’s parentage is CIS DNA verified.
  2. RED text represents animals from outside registries that verify parentage using blood sample DNA testing to verify both the sire and dam. These animals are NOT CIS verified but recognized by CIS.
  3. BLUE text represents animals from outside registries that verify parentage using blood sample DNA testing to verify only the sire. These animals are NOT CIS verified but recognized by CIS.
  4. GREY text represents animals from outside registries that do not verify parentage. These animals are NOT CIS verified but recognized by CIS.

Q: What is the cost and what services will Camelid owners receive?
A: Cost and services listed below

FEES

(DISOUNTS AVAILABLE FOR MULTIPLE HERD ENTRIES, contact CIS office via email to help with assistance.)

Nonprofit Camelid organizations seeking DNA profiling of wild Camelid herds; Research grants are available. Please contact us and or fill out appropriate grant application as will be provided with organizations information.

CIS DNA profile includes CIS certificate. $42.00

CIS Parental Verification (CIS CERTIFIED) (up to 5 sire comparisons) Parents must be CIS certified.
If the parents of the individual Camelid being certified are not in the CIS data base and you would like to have parental verification and CIS certification then each parent will have to be certified via same DNA hair follicle sample submission. $32.00

Foreign Parental Lineage Qualification (FPLQ) (***NON-CIS CERTIFIED***) note: Choose this option if Parent confirmation by DNA analysis has been completed by a qualified registry or laboratory other than CIS, and you DO NOT WANT the parents certified with CIS. If you choose this option you will need to provide CIS with a copy of the Camelids registry certificate and DNA lab report to verifying lineage supplied by the qualified registry or laboratory. For those qualified registries that do not confirm lineage by DNA, only the Camelids registry certificate is required. FPLQ additional $15.

SERVICES

How old does an animal need to be for DNA testing?
There is no age limit for DNA testing. However, if you are submitting a hair sample, we need 30-50 hairs with intact roots.

How long will it take to test my sample(s)?
Samples are tested in the order they are received. Test results are usually completed within 5-10 working days.

Can you RUSH my testing and/or parentage verification?
Every sample sent to the laboratory is processed as soon as delivered in the order received. Upon completion of the testing and analysis, the results are sent electronically to CIS.

Parentage Verification
How long will it take to receive the results of parentage verification?
This depends on many factors such as: volume of samples needing parentage analysis, condition of the sample, whether or not the parents have been updated from blood typing to DNA and if we have been provided with complete information on the identification of all possible parents including VGL case numbers. If all of the preceding conditions are met, DNA typing and parentage analysis should be completed within 7-10 business days.

Why do you need to test the dam? I know the dam.
You may know who the dam is but we need to know the genetic information the dam provides in order to deduce what genetic markers must come from the sire. Both parents provide an effective result that would be legally conclusive. Testing only one parent will give you one of two possible answers: the single parent can be excluded, or it could “qualify” as being a possible parent. This does not mean it is a parent only that it could be.
